At last Apple has released iOS 6.1 publicly. This release has been long awaited for it foreshadows a release of the next major jailbreak for iOS. News has been quiet for some time of a jailbreak. We heard a few weeks ago that there was in fact a iOS 6 and 6.1 exploit. Now Musclenerd, Pod2g, Planetbeing, and @pimskeks have joined together to create the evad3er dev team.

As of right now the developers are working on finishing a stable release for the public. There have been a few tweets to spark the audience on twitter like MuscleNerd’s tweet:

“Hey, did everyone know the Super Bowl is this Sunday? What will you be doing? /cc @evad3rs evad3rs.com”

So the Apple vs. Samsung dilemma has been carrying out for a long time. But just today, reports out of Korea are suggesting that Samsung Displays have already taken the decision to end the contract with Apple that will stop the supply of Liquid Crystal Display panels from its devices. Like most of us know by now Apple and Samsung have been going at it for a while and this is just another thing to add to the bad break-up list.

Its been said that the reason for this whole ending is because Apple is stiffening up their supple chains and squeeze higher profits out of their processes. An unknown Samsung employee that supposedly holds a senior management position with the company said that “they are unable to supply flat-screens to Apple with huge price discounts. Samsung has already cut our portion of shipments to Apple and next year we will stop shipping displays” Although Samsung has been the largest provider of the LCD panels to Apple this year, the iPhone makers have been leaning towards LG and Sharp for their display technology. Now these reports haven’t been officially confirmed by the company, it is highly expected that all of Apple’s LCD panels will be supplied by other companies other then Samsung in the near future. As always make sure to check back here on iTweak.tv for more Apple rumors and news!

As most of you may know Apple will be holding an event next week on October 25th in San Jose. Now the main focus of this event is supposed to be the presumed iPad Mini. As well as the iPad Mini, there is supposed to be new set of Mac Mini’s and iMac desktops getting a makeover. But on the side note there are new rumors leaning towards a new iBooks release. With the new iPad Mini on its way it sounds just right that Apple will be releasing a new iBooks. Seeing that the iPad has been a success as a part of the education world, Apple may just be knocking on school doors with this one. If you check out the picture below you can see that this iTunes book hints towards the iBooks 3.0 release. Just take a look at the requirements section and check it out for yourself.

Although in the past the iPad has not been considered as much of a device for reading books, the iPad Mini however with its smaller price tag, will probably be an easy buy for the average reader looking to turn to digital books. Not much is really know so far on the exact updates of the new iBooks 3.0 but keep it in mind as the event gets near. As always make sure to check back here on iTweak.tv for more Apple rumors and news!

MacRumors posted some images that they got from a Chinese forum. These images show the new macbook pro 13″ retina display model. This Mac should be similar to the 15″ MBP retina. It will be thin without a DVD drive. The price is expected to be around $1500. This MacBook will most likely have quad core intel ivy bridge chips. I would assume that they would put a dedicated graphics card in because the 2880 x 1536 resolution requires a good amount of power.

So iFixit got their hands on the new iPod Touch 5. iFixit typically guts the new apple devices to discovery how repairable the device is what exactly the inside looks like. iFixit says the iPod Touch is a 3 of 10 on their repairability scale. This means it is slightly harder to repair than the iPod Touch 4g which they rate at a 4/10.

A few weeks back, before the iPhone 5 release, T-Mobile began their campaign which stated that customers could bring an unlocked iPhone to their store and they would distribute a proper fitted sim card and offer up to unlimited data a month. This is interesting because AT&T nor Verizon offers Unlimited data. T-Mobile also advertises that their rates could save up to $1200 in service fees over AT&T’s current rates and plans. Spring does provide an unlimited plan but their network has not been expanded enough. The main contenders for iPhone service is Verizon and AT&T.

T-Mobile challenges these companies head on. It appears though that T-Mobile was instructed to remove the iPhone and Apple name from their advertisements. It is unclear as to whether Apple’s legal team got involved. I personally think T-Mobile was expecting this but thought it was worth a try to get the publicity. Obviously if I am writing about this their plot worked…

Regardless to the branding of iPhone and Apple dropped, T-Mobile will still support unlocked iPhone users with their unlimited plan. This also means any other AT&T exclusive device will be able to be adapted to T-Mobile’s network officially.

Also T-Mobile said their 4G network does work on the iPhone 4S and it supposed to be much faster than AT&T’s 3G network. Also LTE network is supposed to work with the iPhone 5.

Let me know what you think. Would you switch?

Verizon iPhone 5 is unlocked! Well sort of? According to a report today from AP, Verizon is not going to re-lock the iPhone 5.

“NEW YORK (AP) — Verizon Wireless said Monday that it won’t prevent its version of the iPhone 5 from being used on AT&T’s network. The Verizon version of the iPhone 5, which went on sale Friday, came with an unexpected feature: it works on the network of AT&T and many other phone companies [including T-Mobile], as well as on Verizon’s. It’s the first time Verizon, the country’s largest cellphone company, has sold a phone that works on competing U.S. networks with no complicated hacking, or “unlocking,” procedures.”

Now most of us know that from the past Verizon did everything that it could to keep their customers AWAY from AT&T and other competing companies. But this time around they really cant do that. A Howard Forums poster noted that when Verizon bought its 700MHz spectrum a few years ago, which it now uses for LTE, it told the Federal Communications Commission it would not lock phones that used this network as part of the deal. AP continues there report saying…

“I’ve been reading up on the open access provisions in regards to the C-Block of 700 mhz LTE spectrum. There is a very specific line saying that a licensee(Verizon) cannot configure devices to be locked against use on another network. This means that Verizon would be violating Federal law if the iPhone 5′s sim slot is even partially locked. Unlike on the iPhone 4S – these regulations mean that Verizon must even allow an AT&T sim card to be used in any Verizon iPhone 5.

The relevant law is found here in the Code of Federal Regulations
Title 47 – Telecommunication. CHAPTER I – FEDERAL COMMUNICATIONS COMMISSION (CONTINUED). SUBCHAPTER B – COMMON CARRIER SERVICES. PART 27 – MISCELLANEOUS WIRELESS COMMUNICATIONS SERVICES. Subpart B – Applications and Licenses. § 27.16Network access requirements for Block C in the 746-757 and 776-787 MHz bands.

Take a look at this : (e) Handset locking prohibited. No licensee may disable features on handsets it provides to customers, to the extent such features are compliant with the licensee’s standards pursuant to paragraph (b)of this section, nor configure handsets it provides to prohibit use of such handsets on other providers’ networks.”

Of course there is a downside to this whole iPhone unlock thing and it’s that Verizon iPhone’s cannot utilize LTE on AT&T’s network, but it will however be able to use T-Mobile’s 2G and new 1900MHz 4G network.

Once again another apple device has been jailbroken on launch day. iPhone Jailbreak Developer @chpwn posted a picture of Cydia running on the iPhone 5. This seems to be a legitimate picture and the photo seems to have not been photoshopped. This proof of concept is great news for anyone who just picked up a new iPhone 5.

There is no word of what exploit was used nor if/when this will be released. I have no doubts that this jailbreak it legitimate but I do have doubts if this is an exploit in which it can be distributed to users.

As time winds down to the official release of the iPhone 5 anticipation is very high. Recently there has been leaks of the retail packaging of the iPhone 5. These leaks appear to be legitimate. An interesting note is that the apple earpods come in the rapped up packaging like they sell separately. Also there is no lighting to 30 pin converter adapter in the box. Check out the images below and let us know what you think.

When Apple first showed off their new release of iOS, iOS 6, we saw many new features. Among many, we saw that Facetime would be allowed over cellular network. Later we saw a limit set by AT&T, just like tethering, that brought up a popup telling users to call AT&T or view the website to order a plan to use this feature. There has been a lot of controversy considering that this feature simply uses part of a subscriber’s cellular data. Verizon has not yet decided if they will charge but Sprint went ahead and said they would not be charging.

Recently we have seen an open internet group that plans to file a FCC complain against AT&T:

On Tuesday, Free Press, Public Knowledge, and the New America Foundation’s Open Technology Institute notified AT&T of their intent to file a formal complaint against the company. In the complaint, the three organizations will assert that AT&T is violating Net Neutrality by blocking the popular video-conferencing application FaceTime.

One of the main point of arguments of the complaints is the following policy set by the FCC:

“under the Open Internet rules the FCC passed in 2010, AT&T cannot block apps that compete with the company’s traditional voice-calling service.”

It will be interesting to see where this complaint goes. Personally I think AT&T should be sued for the unfulfilled “Unlimited Data Plan”. Leave your thoughts down below on what you think.

But one little secret is that the markings on the A6 chip shown both at the iPhone 5 announcement and on Apple’s current page appear to be Samsung parts? AnandTech translated the markings on the chip and this is what they had to say about it.

“Apple thankfully didn’t obscure the details of its A6 slide at the launch event, which gave us a Samsung part number: K3PE7E700F-XGC2. Through crafty navigation of Samsung’s product guide, Brian Klug got us the details. The K3P tells us we’re looking at a dual-channel LPDDR2 package with 32-bit channels. The E7E7 gives us the density of each of the two DRAM die (512MB per die, 1GB total). The final two characters in the part number give us the cycle time/data rate, which in this case is 1066MHz.”

Now this A6 chip does beat the speed of the iPhone 4s by a far, but it’s not quite as fast as the iPad 3. Check out the chart below for different product speeds.

Since the announcement of the iPhone 5, apple fanatics have been raving about the new lightning connector. This connector is unique in its 9 pin design and reversible pins. This connector allows for less space consumption in the iPhone internally but causes issues with compatibility. Most apple accessories are based on apple’s 30 pin connector. Apple has created a solution for this by selling converters. These converters go for $30 which is a pretty hefty price considering the simplicity of the component itself.

There was speculation that Apple would be the only manufacture of the lighting cables and converters but we recently we have seen connectors on ebay and amazon which are less expensive.

With the launch of apple’s preorder service for the iPhone 5, apple has been “blow away” with response from the customers. This is an actual response that apple made regarding the iPhone 5 preorders. An official statement from an apple spokesman: “We’ve been completely blown away by the customer response.”

“Blown Away” is right! Within 60 minutes of preorders the iPhone 5′s ship times increased to weeks. For anyone looking to get an iPhone 5 anytime soon and did not already preorder will have better luck waiting in line at an apple, AT&T, Verizon, or sprint store on launch day.
